Why your kite or wing loses air overnight (what’s normal and what’s not)
If your kite or wing feels softer the next day, you’re not alone.
This is one of the most common questions we hear at our repair shop in Stuart, Florida.
In some cases, a slight pressure drop is completely normal.
In others, it’s an early sign of a leak that should be addressed before it gets worse.
So how do you tell the difference?
What’s normal
A small loss of pressure overnight can be completely normal.
Changes in temperature - especially between a warm day and a cooler night - can cause the air inside the bladder to contract. This can make your kite or wing feel slightly softer the next day.
If the change is minor and your gear still holds shape well, there’s usually no need to worry.
What’s not normal
If your kite or wing feels noticeably soft, or loses pressure consistently, it’s usually a sign of a problem.
Common signs to watch for:
Significant pressure loss overnight
A soft leading edge or struts
The need to re-inflate after a session break
These are early indicators that something is not holding air as it should.
Common causes of air loss
At our kite and wing repair shop, we regularly see a few common reasons why gear loses air:
Small leaks in the bladder
Valve issues or loose valve bases
Connection points between struts and leading edge
In some cases, even small amounts of sand inside the leading edge can cause abrasion on the bladder over time. This can lead to micro leaks that are difficult to detect at first but gradually worsen.
In addition, repeatedly folding your kite or wing along the same lines can create stress points in the material over time. These stress points can eventually affect the bladder and lead to small leaks.
Many of these problems start small and are not always visible right away.
How to check your gear
You can do a quick check at home:
Inflate your kite or wing to the recommended pressure
Leave it overnight in a stable temperature environment
Check if the pressure drop is noticeable - for example, if the leading edge feels softer than expected
If you suspect a leak, you can also:
Listen for a hissing sound
Use soapy water to spot air bubbles
Check around valves and connection points
These simple checks can help you identify early issues.
Why early repair matters
Small leaks rarely stay small.
What starts as a minor pressure loss can turn into a larger failure, often at the worst possible moment.
We often see cases where a small bladder leak or loose valve could have been repaired easily, but was left too long and caused additional damage.
