When a small kite or wing tear needs repair (and when tape may be enough)

If you find a small tear in your kite or wing canopy, it may not always mean an urgent repair.

In some cases, a small tear can be taped temporarily and continue to perform well.

In other cases, even a small tear should be repaired early before it spreads.

So how do you tell the difference?

When tape may be enough

For very small canopy tears, especially under about one inch and away from seams or high-load areas, repair tape can sometimes be an effective temporary solution.

A clean, properly applied ripstop patch may stop the tear from spreading for a while.

For many repairs, tape works best as a temporary fix rather than a long-term structural solution.

When a small tear should be repaired

Some small tears may look minor but carry much higher loads than they appear to.

Professional repair is often recommended when a tear is:

• Along a seam or load path

• Near the leading edge or strut

• Beginning to spread or elongate

• In an area under repeated tension

A small tear near a seam can become a much larger repair if left too long.

What about tape alone?

Tape can be useful, but not everywhere.

For canopy cloth, small field repairs with tape can make sense.

But tears in structural areas, such as leading edge Dacron or along load-bearing seams, generally require stitched reinforcement.

In those cases, tape alone rarely holds long term.

Why early repair matters

Small tears often stay inexpensive repairs, until they grow.

What starts as a short canopy tear can become a larger panel repair if it spreads under load.

We often see damage that could have been a simple repair become much bigger because it was left too long.

Early repair is usually the easier repair.
